just got back

from eso won books on la brea; just bought Stanton-Salazar's Manufacturing Hope & Despair for soc M108. eso won is an independent bookstore specializing in black/social justice literature owned by james fugate. very cool guy. check it out. fight the power.

i stayed up from about 9pm on sunday night to 9pm monday night. which was yesterday, i suppose. as usual my perception of time is warped.

i really like starting class at 12:30 on tuesday; that gives me time to actually really wake up and get things done like put on socks that match, eat breakfast and listen to the fireside chat. today's guest was Ben Wolfinsohn, writer/director of High School Record, which just premiered at Sundance. the actors are all young Los Angeles rock musicians (members of mika miko, my little red toe, wives). the film stars the owner of the smell and one of the minutemen is even in this movie. the acting looks really bad, but who can say no to awkward high school kids? the last good high school movie was mean girls. the most heartfelt and endearing portrayal of high school outsiders goes to freaks and geeks--i have watched the hell out of the dvd set. anyway, hopefully this movie is a whole lot better than that Napoleon Dynamite trainwreck. that film was a ploy to sell vote for pedro ringer tees.

flashback (to yesterday)--after class i talked to my soc of family professor. i just told her that this american life is one of my favorite radio shows and how cool it is that she uses it as a learning supplement and that i think all sociology professors should use TAL in class etc etc. the only thing i didn't say was "i love you." we talked about how lame it is when people use science to justify everyday assumptions, be it that men are less suitable parents than women, or that the purpose of sex is to reproduce, or that women are not fit to be in STEM fields. fuck science, yo.

she put on lip gloss and lipstick and says that she must be on her way to her other job; she explains that she works two other "non-academic" jobs. i didn't bother to ask what they were, nor do i think she'd tell me if i did. she wore this neat jacket that reminds me of my rug, and in her purse she had these big, dark sunglasses with plastic, neon-green frames.
